Description

The Zuchon, also known as a Shichon, Tzu Frise, or Teddy Bear, is a cross between a Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu. Zuchon or Teddy Bear puppies have hanging ears, round eyes with mostly curly hair and come in a combination of black, brown, and white; which is also why they got the name Teddy Bear. Teddy Bears reach an average height of 9-12 inches from the shoulder and weigh approximately 8-25 pounds fully grown. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in those breeds. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Teddy Bear dogs and puppies do not shed but they require maintenance with regular grooming. Commonly referred to as hypoallergenic dogs, Zuchons are a top choice of breed for owners with allergy problems although allergic reactions may still occur. The Zuchon is a toy breed and aside from the fact that the puppies and dogs are absolutely adorable, they are known for their playful, spirited and well-mannered demeanor. The dogs can at times be stubborn, but if you train them well this breed makes a great family pet. They are easy to train and fast learners. They are very social which also makes them very endearing and lovable. Teddy Bears are known for their devotion to their owner(s) but they need love and attention in return: this is not a breed that will get along well if left alone for long periods of time. Despite their size, Zuchons make fairly good watch dogs and will bark to alert their owner(s) if someone is approaching the home or nearby. They are typically good with other pets especially when they are socialized at a young age. Teddy Bears get along with children but owners should supervise child/Zuchon play time to make sure the puppy does not get hurt or harassed by kids because of their small size.

Health Awareness

Zuchons or Teddy Bears have great longevity. The average life-expectancy is around 12–15 years. The Zuchon, like many hybrids, is usually healthy without showing the congenital defects that some purebreds display if not responsibly bred. This is especially true if the Zuchon is a first generation dog. When a multi-generation Zuchon is born, the possibility of health issues increases. Some possible defects known to designer dogs include canine hip dysplasia, deafness, epilepsy, and liver disease.

Additional Information

The Zuchon/Teddy Bear has an affectionate and devoted personality. They love living with their owners as a companion dog and do not go for a kennel or do well if left alone for long periods of time since they crave spending time with humans. These traits also make them good with children and other pets. Zuchons are an alert breed, which makes them good guard dogs.
